a hospital visit, loving hearts, and bridge africa

After the kids went to bed the first night after meeting Charles Tucker for the first time, Dee's on going cough he aquired in the states intensified and he came down with a fever and felt like he could not breath. So we decided to go find a Ugandan doctor around 10:30 Wednesday night. Our driver Patrick was so wonderful to take us to this medical clinic so late at night. Well, there was no doctor, but only a nurse on call...they only call the doctor if it is an emergency. So she put an IV port in Dee's hand and gave him something to help him breath better and a dose of cortozone. Within thirty minutes he was feeling better. Fun times...first night in Africa we end up at a hospital...kind of scary, but an experience. To my surprise, Dee was the only patient in the whole building. Dee said that the health insurance is so expensive, that no one can afford it and the government does not provide it for the people. The Ugandans just have to weather each sickness and hope for the best...I guess that is why so many people die, such a different way of life. Something I have always taken forgranted...
As of today, Dee is feeling better, but taking lots of medicine to make it through each night so he can sleep. He is defintiely not himself and wishing he felt well, please pray that he would get better soon so he could enjoy his last week in Uganda...Henry and Dee leave next Tuesday night. This is the hospital below...

The next day we slept late and spent the whole afternoon at Loving Hearts Baby Home loving on all the precious little ones, but giving special attention to Charles Tucker. The babies home below...

He was so cute showing off in his johnny jump up!

Then we took the babies outside for a little fresh air. Charles Tucker really seemed to enjoy his first American food...a granola bar.

Mary Taylor really has enjoyed being at the babies home, the kids are exactly her age. It is so cute to see her interact with them...

He has the most amazing laugh...

Then the babies noticed a butterfly flying in the tent above them. It was so cute to hear them say "butterfly" in their little Ugandan baby voices...the accent sounds very British with an African flare.

These are some of the other babies at Loving Hearts. They are all waiting on their parents to come bring them home! So great to be in a place where you know all the children will all have the attention and love that they need...VERY SOON!
This is a volunteer named Margaret and baby "A". Isn't she beautiful??

Baby "J" also notices the butterfly. He is a very savvy young boy, who also enjoys lots of special attention, as do all the babies...

And all the babies love baby "B". He has the funniest personality..just precious!

Baby "F" who just arrived to Loving Hearts a couple of weeks ago. She has been sick with Malaria, but is feeling better now. She is so sweet and loves to be held...

Baby "K" and baby "A" watching all the big kids run around...

Baby "M" is so happy and responsive. We all call him "the giggly baby"...

Then there are several "mamas" who take care of the babies day and night who are absolutely committed to the well being of these children and love them very much!! One of the my favorite is Mama Agnus...who all the babies love too. She is a lot of fun to be around! She also makes the Ugandan magazine beads. I hope to bring home a bunch to sell at home to raise money for the babies home and help those who are in the process of adopting.

Here is a picture of the beads...

All the babies in the home are constantly watching Henry and Mary Taylor, but the toddler boys really seem to look up to Henry...

Mary Taylor eventually ends up in daddy's arms by the end of the day. Both kids were still so off from jet lag and the time change...It has taken us a week to get on a good schedule.

Before we leave for the night, we usually feed Charles Tucker, the other babies dinner and then help put them to sleep. But if our own kids are restless, we sometimes leave early and just hand C.T. to a Mama so he won't throw a fit when we leave. It is so hard to leave him... (Charles Tucker and Mama Agnus)

On the walk back to our guest house, we pass the largest hills of mud...later we found out they were termite hills. Look how tall these are...

Our guest house is the next gate to the right...

This is our guest house, Bridge Africa, in which we love! The facilities are very nice, the staff is so very helpful and very friendly, and they provide a phone, internet, a driver, and breakfast every morning. We could stay at Loving Hearts, but this place gives us our own space to spread out and have family time together along with another family who is currently staying with us. It has worked out great so far...I am convienced, we could not be in a better place in Uganda.

And this the view from our house...

Love you all!
Melissa, Dee, Henry, Mary Taylor, and Charles Tucker
